First Day in Dar

Habari!

After our arrival to our accommodation at the Salvation Army in Dar at 4am on Saturday, we were more than ready for a good nights (or mornings) rest. Because of our long day of travelling we were allowed to stay in bed until the late morning, and awoke to beautiful sunny weather, not only was this a lovely surprise but also Julieth, who visited us last year in Cumbria, surprised us all and gave us a happy reunion! A tasty lunch in the accommodation helped prepare us for a lesson in speaking Kiswahili with Valentino, one of our Tanzanian friends. We covered greetings, introductions and basic questions to help us navigate our way through Tanzanian life! The lesson was very helpful, and gave us some insight into the culture before us; we all came out of it with fresh knowledge and an eagerness to practice it in a real-life situation.

Our evening plans were very exciting; we were set to travel to the swimming pool and have dinner, we all gathered our swimming costumes, mosquito spray and towels and were ready for a day in the water. We caught our first Tanzanian bus (dala dala) to the pool; encountering round-a-bouts with no rules and taking in a first look of the capital in daylight along the way! Upon arrival at the pool we discovered that it was closed, even after all our preparation! This did not dampen our eager spirits; we sat beside the pool playing Uno and talking about what we can expect in the weeks to come, we then ordered our food, many of us wishing to try the chicken and chips that the Tanzanian students enthusiastically spoke about when they visited us last year. However, we had a two and a half hours to wait! To end the night we caught another dala dala back to the Salvation Army, and braved crossing a Dar Es Salaam highway for an exhilarating end to our first day on Tanzanian soil.
